2003 AREA 6 OPEN CHAMPION
The sights, sounds and smells of the Charleston, South Carolina area lowlands is very alive and inviting at this time of year. 284 Competitors from far and wide converged on the Palmetto Gun Club Range for the hosting of the 2003 Area 6 Championship. It was a time to make some new aquantances, catch up with some old friends and push your shooting equipment and skills to the limit. The weather forcast was calling for scattered showers, but the blast of the numerous firearms apparently frightened the the storm clouds away. It becomes evident when you first pull in, that the club has been hard at work on range improvements. There are nine very challenging stages setup and awaiting to test your skills. With partial targets at 40+ yards, close up targets that tempt you to go too fast, to a rotating chair with a shooting port that rotates through the arrays of statics and swingers, to two side by side Texas Star moving plate targets that are partially covered, it will prove to be a very challenging match. By the end of the weekend, over 73,000 rounds were to be expended and almost as many holes were to be pasted. After the dust settled a great time was had by all. The competition was stiff, the setups and the shots were appropriately challenging, overall a great match. Chris began the match on stage 9 with a very solid run but a little off the pace. Then on to stage 1 with some very tough long shots where Chris was able to win the stage by almost 20 points. Stage 2, a speed course with 4 targets up, 4 targets down and then 4 targets back up again, had Chris, Max and Michael Voight within 5 points of each other. Stage 3 had Chris, Max and Michael very close again with Voight slipping a bit. Chris stretched his lead out on stage 4 with a very solid run in the chair. Stage 5 was a little off the pace but still a solid run. Problems on Stage 6 with 2 rounds deflected off of barrels reduced the lead to single digits. This just set Chris in his resolve. With a very solid run on Stage 6 and a Stage win on Stage 7, Chris Tilley would win the Area 6 Championship!
